How To Link Your NIN To Your Phone Number

 On Tuesday 15th December 2020, the Nigeria Nation Communication Commission issued out a directive to all telcos, stating that  all mobile phone number should be link to the National Identification Number (NIN). Failure to do so within the next two weeks means you will be blocked from using your mobile phone number.

Today, we’ll discuss how to link your NIN with your SIM or phone number so that you’ll not be blocked from using your mobile line in the next two weeks.

The NCC issued out a circular warning that whoever doesn’t link their National Identification Number with their SIM will be blocked from using their mobile lines. This report was made viral by the Special Assistant to president Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad.

“The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given telecommunications operators (MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9Mobile and others) in the country two weeks to block all SIM cards that are not registered with the National Identity Numbers (NIN), the Commission has said in a statement,” he wrote in a tweet. In case you’re wondering how to link your NIN with your phone number, this guide is intended to help clear your doubt and link your NIN to your phone number with ease.

How to Link Your NIN with MTN Phone Number

Telecommunication giant MTN Nigeria was the first to launch a self help portal on how to Link you NIN with your MTN number. They made 2 options available for their teeming to do this successfully. Let’s take a look.

Option 1.

To link your NIN with your MTN phone number using the MTN NIN Self Help Webpage, follow the steps outlined below:

  • Complete the NIN linking form by entering your name, phone number, NIN and email address.
  • Submit the form as soon as you’re done.

  • Wait for feedback from the network in a couple of days.
Option 2.

To link your your NIN with your MTN SIM using USSD, follow the steps below:

  1. Dial *785# using the MTN line you wish to perform the linking on.
  2. Type 1 for “Enter your 11-digit NIN” and send.
  3. Enter your 11-digit NIN and send.

Wait for the network to give a confirmation of your submission. You may get a message saying “Network error.”

Don’t panic if you do! Just wait for some time and try it again.

How to Link Your NIN with Airtel Phone Number

To link your NIN to your Airtel phone number, follow the steps below:

  • Dial *121# on the Airtel line you wish to link.
  • Type 1 for “NIN Capture” and send
  • Enter your 11-digit NIN and send.

Wait for the message confirming your submission. If you get an error, just wait for some time and try again.

How to Link Your NIN with Glo Phone Number

Like MTN, Glo also have more than one channel to link your NIN with Glo phone number. Let’s see how you can link your NIN with Glo Phone Number.

Option 1
  • Text REG to 746 and wait for network reply
  • Enter and send your 11-digit NIN when the network prompts you to do so.

Wait for the message confirming your submission. If you get an error, just wait for some time and try again.

Option 2
Compose an SMS with the following lines
*UPDATENIN (space) NIN (space) FIRSTNAME (space) LASTNAME” and send to 109
e.g. UPDATENIN 23456988389 ALFRED TECHSBLOG
Then Send to 109
Wait for the message confirming your submission. If you get an error, just wait for some time and try again.
Option 3

To link your NIN with your Glo phone number using the Glo NIN Self Help Webpage, follow the steps outlined below:

  • Complete the NIN linking form by entering your name, phone number, NIN and email address.
  • Submit the form as soon as you’re done.
  • Wait for feedback from the network in a couple of days.

How to Link Your NIN with 9Mobile Phone Number

For now, 9Mobile has not provided a means for users to link their lines with their NINs. As soon as they commence, we will update this post to reflect the steps you must follow to carry out the linking.

How To Register For Your NIN

However, to get yourself ready to be able to carry out the linking of your NIN with your phone number here’s what you must do:

  1. Visit any NIMC office near you and apply for your National Identity Card if you haven’t
  2. Register and obtain your temporary ID slip which will contain your NIN
  3. Keep your NIN details in a safe place so that you’ll be able to provide them when necessary.

What if you forgot your NIN and don’t have the slip?

If you don’t know your NIN, just dial *346# on the SIM card you registered with the National Identity Management Centre (NIMC).

A message containing your NIN will be displayed, just copy it somewhere safe. Note that checking your NIN via the USSD provided above costs N20 only.

If you’re facing issues performing the linking, you might have to visit your network provider’s office to lodge a complaint. Alternatively, call the customer care line for your network provider and provide details on the challenges you’re facing.
